1st & 2nd Grade Science

Instruction

First Grade Science

In science, first-grade students begin to build on the concept that it is helpful to collaborate with others, to work as a team and to share thoughts, ideas, and discoveries.  Through the topics of “Animals” (basic needs, environments, and life cycles); “Weather” (weather terminology and weather conditions); “Properties and Changes in Matter” (solids and liquids); and “Magnetism” (attracting and repelling) students explore life, earth, and physical sciences.

Second Grade Science

In second grade, students are given multiple opportunities to conduct investigations in which they collect and analyze data before communicating their findings.  Through the use of the Science Lab and our certified science instructor, students participate in hands-on experiments that explore the life, earth, and physical sciences within the framework of the following topics:  “Habitats and Adaptations” (physical and behavioral science); “Earth’s Materials and Changes” (rocks, soil, water, fossils); “Heat and Changes in Matter” (sources of heat, solids, liquids, gases); and “Motion and Sound” (position, effects of force, vibrations, and pitch).
